One of the more exciting opportunities I have had since starting my academic career at Northeastern University was creating a consulting case for my international business class. Over the course of a semester long case, I learned more applicable skills and information than I had in many of my other courses. Being able to see a real and tangible product that was the result of my hard work both in and outside of the classroom brought an entirely new dimension to my learning experience – and I highly recommend using consulting cases as ways to learn both about yourself and about different industries if you are new to the business sphere.

As a mathematics and finance major, I was much more interested in the quantitative side of business going into college and eager to apply my analytical skills to my real-world job someday. I thought that specializing in the math field would give me the tools I needed to be successful in my career. However, the business world is constantly moving toward a more interconnected economy where technical skills will not be enough.

There is nothing like the excitement and potential opportunities that come from moving to a new country. Entering 1st grade my parents made the decision to move from Mexico to Miami in order to pursue a better education for me and my brothers. Despite not knowing a word of English, I like to believe that I established myself as a genuine leader in my community but it definitely didn’t come easy.

Spending my whole life growing up in Vietnam, I was surrounded by people that shared similar cultural identities as me. Most of the friends I’ve had come from the same cultural background, and we share similar mindsets, characteristics, and traditions. I didn’t acknowledge that until I got into Northeastern, a place where nobody comes from the same background, shares the same skin color, and has the same cultural experiences as me.

One of the most exciting things that I have accomplished since I have been in the United State, is the consulting case for my international business class. Through this consulting case, I was able to work for Drexel Hamilton, a veteran-owned investment bank. This group project is a big stepping stone for me as a newcomer in the market, it helps drive me to do more research about the current market as well as the market in other countries, to maximize the work in the group project as well as to achieve many more aspects.

One of the most competitive advantages is rooted in my original culture. Coming from China, I am not only different by skin color but also by my logic and room for growth. Research has shown that various-ethnicity groups can bring corporations competitive advantages, including creativity (McLeod). In the Fall of 2020, I accepted my second co-op in Munich, Germany working in U.S. Taxes for European clients investing in the U.S. Real Estate market. The shift from my finance concentration to tax compliance and tax accounting was new, but I had the knowledge of investments and their structure, so I was not unfamiliar with the industry. Throughout my co-op, which I extended to 8 months, I started to really enjoy U.S. tax compliance and the unique tax issues our team covered. As I wrap up my last semester at Northeastern, I can apply what I learned during co-op and classes to my strategy. Specifically, the VRIO framework I believe can be used not only to analyze firms but also our personal strategy.
